Laurel Fate Sullivan is Koyukon Athabascan. Her family on her mother’s side is from Rampart, and also Allakaket originally. Laurel was born and raised in Anchorage while spending her summers subsistence fishing at her family’s fish camp on the Yukon River, 30 miles upriver from Rampart. She is the granddaughter of the late Mary Jane Evans Fate and Hugh Bud Fate, and the daughter of Julie Fate Sullivan. In 2024 she graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a minor in Russian Language. She interned for FAI during the 2025 Summer Internship Program. Laurel is passionate about mental health awareness, reducing the rates of suicide in our communities, and protecting our subsistence fishing traditions. She is an artist, drawing inspiration from the beauty of Alaska, fish camp, and her Koyukon heritage. She enjoys painting, being outside in nature, and spending time with friends, family, and pets!
