First Alaskans Institute Announces Leadership Transition
Anchorage, Alaska (11/2/2026) — The Board of Trustees of First Alaskans Institute (FAI) announces that President and Chief Executive Officer Roy Agloinga, will conclude his service with the organization on May 31, 2027.
Since assuming leadership in 2024, Agloinga has guided the Institute with a deep commitment to Alaska Native peoples, strengthened partnerships, supporting leadership development, and advancing the organization’s mission “True to identity, heritage, and values, Alaska Natives are informed and engaged in leading the decisions that shape the future,” honoring Alaska Native values and ways of life. During this time, he has also initiated implementation of a Alaska Native Policy Center initiative to assess village economies and ensure survival of rural communities.
"We are grateful for Roy’s leadership, dedication, and service to First Alaskans Institute," said William Iggiagruk Hensley, Chair of the FAI Board of Trustees. "His contributions have strengthened important relationships and supported our shared commitment to Alaska Native leadership and self-determination. We extend our sincere appreciation and wish him continued success."
Reflecting on his service, Agloinga shared: "It has been a profound honor to serve First Alaskans Institute and the people and communities who inspire its work. I am deeply grateful to our Elders, Board, staff, partners, and supporters for their wisdom, trust and shared commitment. I will leave with gratitude for the relationships we’ve built, pride in what we’ve accomplished together, and confidence in the Institute’s future."
The Board of Trustees will guide the leadership transition, ensuring continuity in the Institute’s programs, partnerships, and commitments. FAI remains steadfast in its mission and vision “progress for the next 10,000 years,” while advancing Alaska Native peoples, cultures, and leadership for generations to come.
Founded in 2000, First Alaskans Institute advances Alaska Native peoples and communities through leadership development, advocacy, education, and meaningful engagement. Grounded in indigenous values and knowledge, FAI works to strengthen Native voices, foster collaboration, and build a thriving future for all Alaskans.
