MMIP Day of Awareness: In Remembrance of Our Relatives, We Commit to Justice and Healing

On this Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP) Day of Awareness, First Alaskans Institute stands with families, communities, and loved ones who continue to carry the weight of this crisis.

Across Alaska, Alaska Native people continue to go missing or be taken at disproportionate rates, with inequitable response from law enforcement. In recent months, we’ve seen heightened concern and heartbreak, including the case of Kelly Hunt, whose disappearance and death has deeply impacted our community.

We honor those who are missing and those who have been taken, and we stand with the families who seek answers, healing, and justice. We also recognize the strength and leadership of our communities who have long worked to bring visibility, accountability, and change.

At First Alaskans Institute, we remain committed to using our platform to amplify community voices, support informed action, and stand alongside those working toward healing and justice. We believe true change will come from collective responsibility, grounded in Alaska Native traditional values, and in the leadership of our people. We encourage our community to show up later this month for the Alaska MMIP Justice Summit & Red Dress Gala, hosted on May 27-29 in Anchorage by the MMIWG2S Alaska Working Group, Alaska Native Women's Resource Center, Alaska Native Justice Center, Data for Indigenous Justice, and Native Movement. The Summit is intended to build collaboration, foster education, and find ways to advocate for justice-driven initiatives.

We carry this work forward together, with care, accountability, and a shared responsibility to one another and our communities.

In solidarity,

First Alaskans Institute
