2013 Summer Internship Program

First Alaskans Institute is pleased to announce its 2013 Summer Intern Program to place Alaska Native/American Indian and rural undergraduate and graduate students into organizations around Alaska to provide real-world leadership development experiences.  Some of the areas of focus have included, but are not limited to: Education, Organizational Management, Health & Wellness, Rural & Community Development, Economic Development, Research, Oil & Gas Industry, Public Policy, Science & Engineering, Government.

The First Alaskans Institute was founded by the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) in 1989 as the AFN Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. In 2000, the foundation became independent of AFN and was renamed the First Alaskans Institute. It is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of Alaska Native leaders who bring a diversity of experience in both the private and public sectors.

Funding for the summer intern program is provided primarily through a grant from the Denali Commission. This paid internship is 10 weeks in length, from early June to mid-August. Interns are expected to complete the entire 10 week session, working a full time schedule. Internship placements are available throughout Alaska, and applicants selected to participate will get matched with a partner employer for placement.  Interns are expected to secure their own housing/accommodations for the program.

Interns will unite for five-days of leadership development sessions both at the beginning and end of the internship. Interns will also be provided with concentrated leadership development training every other Friday during the summer program.
