Who We Are

First Alaskans Institute helps develop the capacities of Alaska Native people and their communities to meet the social, economic and educational challenges of the future, while fostering positive relationships among all segments of our society. The Institute does this through community engagement, information and research, collaboration, and leadership development. First Alaskans is a non-profit charitable organization whose purpose is to advance Alaska Natives.

Our Commitments

  • Expand the Alaska Native Policy Center's research and analysis capacity to provide accurate, credible information for Alaska Native leaders and other policy makers as a tool in developing policy initiatives that improve the lives of Alaska Natives.
    • Develop and disseminate Alaska Native demographic information
    • Continue to provide a voice through ongoing discussions, forums and gatherings
    • Provide opportunities for internships and fellowships for policy research projects
  • Help develop the next generation of Alaska Native leaders who will contribute to the advancement of the Native community.
    • Enhance Intern Program for rural and urban college and post-graduate students
    • Develop Juneau and Washington DC internship opportunities
    • Continue to implement the Elders & Youth Conferenc
  • Develop and implement a Community Engagement Program that is aligned with the Institute's initiatives to advance Alaska Natives and thriving communities
    • Develop indicators to measure improvements in Alaska Natives' lives resulting from Community Engagement support
    • Identify and promote best practices through funded projects
  • Cultivate strategic relationships to support core purpose and long-term sustainability
